On the fifth anniversary of the historic signing of the Abraham Accords between Israel and the United Arab Emirates a new player on the Middle East stage is unveiled today – the Accordists – founded by broadcaster and Quilliam champion Maajid Nawaz.
The Accordists movement was established to campaign for the Abraham Accords as the predominant framework for greater peace and prosperity in the Middle East. Founded in London, Accordists will operate online and worldwide with website www.accordists.org and X handle @accordists.
As part of the launch, Accordists commissioned polling by YouGov initially in Britain last week head of this milestone and President Trump’s State Visit to Britain this week. Full results are attached.
The polling shows that 91% of those expressing an opinion agreed that good relations between Israel and Arab nations are ‘Very important’ (49%) or ‘Fairly important’ (43%) to ensuring global peace and security yet 87% of respondents said they had not heard of the Abraham Accords.
Of the over 65’s 96% of those who expressed an opinion said good relations between Israel and Arab nations was important yet 91% had not heard of the Accords. 24% of 18-24s and 22% of 25-49s expressed that they did not know whether good relations between Israel and Arab nations were important, which raises its own concerns for Accordists.
Respondents were asked to choose three out of sixteen issues that would be most important to them in voting in a General Election today. ‘Conflict in Gaza’ took 11th place (with 8% selecting it). For 2024 Conservative or Reform voters the importance of the Gaza conflict was negligible (in 14th place for both sets
of party voters), whereas its importance to 2024 Labour and LibDem voters was higher with 9th and 10th placing. Green voters placed this issue 4th with 27% selecting it compared to 8% of all GB adults.
Accordists suspect that many 2024 Green voters may have transferred their loyalties to Gaza-focussed Labour splinter parties since, highlighting how the Middle East issue could split the left and liberal vote in any coming General Election.
